Pro Bono
Mr. Butler's commitment to the legal profession is evident in his pro bono efforts. Each year, more than 50 criminal domestic homicides occur in South Carolina, one of the highest statistics in the nation. As an avid supporter of lowering this astounding number, Mr. Butler acts as a pro bono special prosecutor for criminal domestic violence prosecution with the South Carolina Attorney General's Office. He has served in this role for over seven years and has helped instruct classes for young lawyers interested in joining the program.
Community Involvement
Mr. Butler has been invested in the local community by coaching youth tee-ball and soccer leagues through the YMCA. He is also an avid supporter of the South Carolina Heart Association and has helped organize various fundraising efforts for the organization.

Drew Hamilton Butler is a shareholder at Richardson Plowden. He joined the firm in 2002 at the Columbia office. As a trial lawyer, he focuses his practice on general litigation, including but not limited to corporate defense litigation, insurance defense litigation, construction litigation, products liability defense, premises liability defense, and personal injury litigation. Mr. Butler's clients appreciate his ability to think on his feet and react to complex situations with straightforward solutions. His successful track record demonstrates his keen knowledge of the law and his unwavering dedication to his practice.
Mr. Butler's experience includes:
- Successfully tried cases in the United States District Court and Circuit Courts of South Carolina.
- Initiated, defended and resolved a variety of premises liability, professional liability, and general insurance defense claims through trial verdicts, mediation and pre-trial motions.
- Successfully defended general contractors and subcontractors in large exposure construction-defect claims.
- Provides insurance coverage opinions for insurance carriers responding to a claim in South Carolina
- Defends various government entities in claims brought under the South Carolina Tort Claims Act or 42 U.S.C. ยง1983
Mr. Butler graduated from Rhodes College in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in political science. While attending Rhodes, Mr. Butler was inducted into the Political Science Honor Society, Pi Sigma Alpha, and was actively involved in the Intercollegiate Mock Trial Program. He was named Intercollegiate Mock Trial All-American in 1999. Mr. Butler also was an active participant in collegiate sports and received an NCAA Baseball and Football letter in 1996 and 1997.
In 2002, Mr. Butler earned his juris doctor from Pennsylvania State University Dickinson School of Law, where he also received his Certificate in Dispute Resolution and Advocacy for his scholastic concentration in trial advocacy. While a law student, he was president of the Delta Theta Phi Legal Society.
Prior to joining Richardson Plowden, Mr. Butler served as a speech writer for the Pennsylvania legislature and worked as a Judicial Law Clerk for Pennsylvania Civil Service Commission Administrative Law Court.
Mr. Butler is a member of the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys' Association and the South Carolina Bar. |
