Jocelyn Newman is an associate with Richardson Plowden. She completed legal internships with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Foundation Litigation and the District of Columbia Office of Human Rights, and a judicial internship with The Honorable Reggie B. Walton, U.S. District Court, all of which took place in Washington, D.C.

Now retired founding shareholder Charles N. Plowden, Jr., helped build the firm’s solid reputation in insurance defense and served as a circuit vice president for the South Carolina Bar.

Jocelyn Newman joined Richardson Plowden in 2007 as an associate in the Columbia office. She focuses her practice in general litigation.

Ms. Newman graduated from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in 1999, making the Dean’s List. She earned her Juris Doctor from Howard University School of Law, Washington, D.C., in 2004, where she was a Merit Scholar.

Prior to joining Richardson Plowden, Ms. Newman was an assistant solicitor in the Fifth Judicial Circuit solicitor’s office, in Columbia, SC. Prior to that, she served as a judicial law clerk to The Honorable G. Thomas Cooper, Jr., of the South Carolina Circuit Court in Columbia. Additionally, Ms. Newman completed legal internships with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Foundation Litigation and the District of Columbia Office of Human Rights, and a judicial internship with The Honorable Reggie B. Walton, U.S. District Court, all of which took place in Washington, D.C.

Ms. Newman has an active pro-bono practice as well, representing impoverished citizens in criminal and family court matters. She has also been a speaker in the “Speakers in Schools” Community Law Week program hosted by the South Carolina Bar Young Lawyers Division. Within the community, Ms. Newman serves as a “Big Sister” in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Columbia, Inc., program. As a member of American Mensa, Ms. Newman partakes in community service outreach programs that work with gifted youth. She is also a member of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Columbia Friends Advisory Board where she works with other board members to enhance the organization's programs and services that help families who have hospitalized children.
